Google Docs vs Quilly for writing and organizing a novel
Choose based on the work you repeat most often. A shared document and a connected novel workspace solve different organizational problems, and some writers will use both at different stages.
Story Health is planned for the Author plan and is not available in Writer or the 14-day free trial. References to its diagnostics on this page describe the upcoming feature. See current plans.
Compare a shared document workflow with Quilly's connected chapter, outline, character, and world workspace, including how a DOCX handoff works.
When the document is the right center
Google Docs supports shared document editing, comments, and suggested edits. That can be a good fit when the main task is discussing prose with an editor or writing group. Keep that existing workflow if it already makes feedback easy.
Quilly's current value is the surrounding story organization: chapters, outline structure, reusable character and world information, foreshadowing, and relationships. This comparison does not claim equivalent shared editorial collaboration in Quilly.
Test the difference with a real chapter
Choose a chapter involving two characters, a location rule, and a clue. In Quilly, keep the prose in the manuscript, the rule in World, and the important discovery in a plot point connected to the relevant entities. Then evaluate whether finding and updating those details is easier for your book.
If your project rarely needs that structure, the extra organization may not earn its maintenance cost. If you repeatedly search several notes to remember an established fact, it may help.
Moving a draft is a file handoff
Google Docs can export a Word DOCX copy. Quilly can import DOCX with chapter preview and export manuscript DOCX/PDF files. There is no live Google Docs synchronization implied by that process; decide which copy you are editing and preserve the original.
Compare the current plans honestly
Quilly's Writer plan is $11.99 per month after a 14-day trial with no card required. Author is advertised at $16.99 per month and is coming soon; its Story Health feature is not included in Writer or the free trial. Evaluate the writing and planning tools available today rather than choosing on future diagnostics.

How to evaluate this comparison
Good planning should reduce uncertainty and make the next writing decision easier. Use these steps to turn the ideas above into something concrete without adding unnecessary process.
Start with the writing job the tools need to solve, not the longest feature list.
Test the manuscript and planning workflow together so you can see how much context switching the tool creates.
Check how easily characters, chapters, events, notes, and plot threads stay connected as a project grows.
Look at export, portability, and switching cost before you move a real manuscript into a new system.
