Manuscript safety workflow

Cloud saves, snapshots, and a recovery habit for your novel

Saving the latest draft and recovering an earlier draft solve different problems. A reliable writing habit uses both, together with a copy you keep outside the app.

Quick answer

Understand Quilly's cloud saves, recoverable snapshots, Trash, and manuscript exports, and build a practical backup routine around your writing.

Know which protection you are using

Quilly provides cloud saving, recoverable snapshots, and Trash workflows. The save indicator helps you check the current writing state; snapshots give you a way to revisit earlier project content; Trash provides a recovery route for supported deletions.

These features reduce common mistakes, but they are not a guarantee against every device, network, account, or service failure. Treat an independent export as another layer rather than assuming any single feature covers everything.

Before a large revision

Before replacing an import, removing a substantial passage, or changing the book's structure, create a manual snapshot and export the current manuscript. Give the export a useful date and revision label so you can tell it apart from the next draft.

For example, save a copy labeled Before midpoint rewrite before cutting several chapters. That label explains what the version protects; a folder full of files named final does not.

Recover carefully

If something appears missing, stop making additional changes until you understand the current state. Check the selected book and chapter, inspect Trash or earlier snapshots as appropriate, and preserve any newer prose before restoring older material.

  • Confirm that you are in the correct project.
  • Check whether the material was moved rather than deleted.
  • Inspect the recovery option before applying it.
  • Reopen the affected chapter and verify the result.

Keep a portable reading copy

DOCX and PDF exports preserve manuscript outputs for use outside Quilly. They do not contain the complete connected project, such as every character profile and world entry. For work you cannot afford to lose, keep the original source files and make exports part of a regular milestone routine.

How to choose without overcomplicating it

Good planning should reduce uncertainty and make the next writing decision easier. Use these steps to turn the ideas above into something concrete without adding unnecessary process.

01

Define the exact friction this kind of tool should remove from your current writing process.

02

Try the tool with a real chapter and a real planning problem instead of judging it from a feature checklist.

03

Pay attention to how much duplicate data entry is required between manuscript, outline, character, and worldbuilding views.

04

Choose a workflow you can keep using during drafting and revision, not only during the exciting setup stage.
