Customizable character profiles

Character profiles built around the questions your novel needs

A good profile helps you write a difficult choice. Quilly gives each character a home for the details that influence decisions, relationships, and continuity.

Quick answer

Organize character motivations, secrets, history, relationships, and custom profile fields in Quilly without repeating the same notes across chapters.

Store the facts that affect scenes

Character profiles include structured areas for information such as motivation, goals, conflict, history, secrets, and notes. The profile field controls let you rename labels and add or remove fields, so a mystery suspect does not need exactly the same questions as a romantic lead.

Keep the profile brief enough to consult. A page of favorite foods is less useful than a sentence explaining what the character will sacrifice to protect a secret.

Turn a questionnaire answer into a story choice

Suppose Mara wants a promotion but believes asking for help makes her weak. Record the external goal, the belief, and the relationship that challenges it. Then plan a plot point where the promotion depends on trusting a colleague.

The profile holds the persistent motivation. The plot point holds the consequential decision. The manuscript shows how that decision feels, including what Mara refuses to admit.

Use connections and images intentionally

Connect the character to relevant story material through plot points and inspect relationships when reviewing the cast. Visual references can support description, but linking an image and setting a profile photo are distinct actions in Quilly.

  • Keep aliases and recurring physical details consistent.
  • Record who knows a secret before a reveal.
  • Add a field for an unusual constraint that matters to this book.
  • Review relationships after a major betrayal or reconciliation.

Keep development separate from automatic judgment

A profile does not prove an arc works. Check whether the draft shows the character making different choices under pressure. Use the questions as prompts for revision, and remove fields that never help you write.

How to choose without overcomplicating it

Good planning should reduce uncertainty and make the next writing decision easier. Use these steps to turn the ideas above into something concrete without adding unnecessary process.

01

Define the exact friction this kind of tool should remove from your current writing process.

02

Try the tool with a real chapter and a real planning problem instead of judging it from a feature checklist.

03

Pay attention to how much duplicate data entry is required between manuscript, outline, character, and worldbuilding views.

04

Choose a workflow you can keep using during drafting and revision, not only during the exciting setup stage.
