Novel Writing Software for Drafting and Story Planning
A novel grows in two directions: the words on the page and the story information behind them. Quilly brings chapter-based writing and connected planning into one browser workspace, so the outline, cast, world, and clues can stay close to the draft.
Novel-writing software helps you draft, organize, and revise a long manuscript. Quilly combines a chapter-based editor with Story Builder, Characters, World, Events, Foreshadowing, Relationships, and Goals & Progress. Writer includes the current writing and planning tools; Story Health is coming soon in Author and is excluded from Writer and the trial.
- Write prose by chapter and plan turns separately.
- Connect recurring story facts through plot points.
- Import DOCX and export manuscript DOCX/PDF copies.
What a novel workspace should help you do
A general document editor can hold an entire book. A dedicated novel workspace becomes useful when finding, changing, and remembering story information starts interrupting the writing. You may need to know where a character last appeared, why a revelation matters, or which chapter established a rule before continuing a scene.
Quilly keeps those jobs in distinct views within a book project. The manuscript holds prose; Story Builder holds narrative structure; reusable story records hold details that appear more than once. This separation gives a recurring character one profile rather than a different biography in every chapter note.
A worked example: one discovery across the workspace
Imagine a courier discovers that the letter she carries has been forged. Write the discovery in her manuscript chapter. Add a plot point for the moment she stops trusting the sender, with beats for noticing the seal, comparing handwriting, and deciding to hide the letter.
Connect the courier, the sender, the letter, and the relevant event to that plot point. Store the city's seal rules in World and an earlier suspicious detail in Foreshadowing. Each record answers a different question: what happens, who it affects, what is true, and what the reader has already seen.
When the sender's motive changes during revision, inspect the connected material and reread the affected prose. Connections provide a useful map; they do not automatically rewrite the manuscript or guarantee that every contradiction has been found.
Use only the structure your current draft needs
You can start with a chapter and a small cast. Add world entries, events, and beats as they begin solving actual writing problems. Discovery writers do not need to finish a complete outline before writing, and detailed planners can prepare several levels before drafting.
A productive first session might involve one chapter goal, two character profiles, one location, and a single important turn. Build enough context to make the next decision easier. If maintaining a field takes more effort than consulting it saves, simplify the structure.
Drafting, revision, and manuscript portability
The manuscript offers focus mode, formatting, find and replace, anchored comments, review tools, and read-aloud controls. Use a comment for an unresolved passage and return to it during revision instead of stopping every writing run to solve every question.
Bring an existing Word draft through DOCX import with chapter detection and preview. Export the full manuscript or selected chapters as DOCX or PDF, and inspect a sample output early. A manuscript export is not the same as a complete connected-project backup or a publication-ready typeset book.
Is Quilly the right fit for your writing process?
Quilly is a fit to evaluate when your draft needs connected planning and reference information nearby. If the central requirement is a particular editor's shared-document process, a native offline application, or professional print layout, test that requirement explicitly before changing tools.
The Writer plan is $11.99 per month after a 14-day trial with no card required. Author is advertised at $16.99 per month and is coming soon. Judge today's writing workflow on its current features rather than treating upcoming Story Health diagnostics as available trial functionality.

Frequently asked questions
Can I start writing without creating a full outline?
Yes. You can draft by chapter and add plot points, beats, and reference information as the book develops. The planning hierarchy does not require completing a prescribed story template.
Can I bring an existing manuscript into Quilly?
DOCX manuscript import includes chapter detection and preview. New-book setup also accepts TXT and Markdown files. Existing-book import settings use DOCX, and PDF import is not supported.
Does the trial include Story Health?
No. Story Health is coming soon in Author and is excluded from Writer and the 14-day trial. The trial lets you evaluate the current writing and planning workspace.
Does Quilly replace a book-formatting application?
Quilly is focused on planning, drafting, and story organization. DOCX and PDF manuscript exports support a handoff, but Quilly is not marketed as a professional publication-layout or typesetting application.
